He has been carving stone for 10 years and does 3-D as well as relief carvings as depicted below in the gull and bird bath carving in granite. CAPE BRETON MARBLE CARVINGS

Formed from metamorphosed limestone deposits, this Cape Breton Marble is over 600,000,000 years old. It occurs in isolated bands and pockets throughout Cape Breton. Each of these unique carvings were boulders were hand picked from the forest by professional geologist and stone carver, Perry MacKinnon, a lifelong resident of the island. For some of these works their eventual form was dictated by the natural shape and patterns in the stone, while for others, the artist had a preconceived shape in mind. Some of the forms evolved as the rock was honed down from the rough shape in which it was found, to a fresh surface.
Patterns in the rock mainly reflect original layering or bedding, and/ or subsequent structural processes such as faulting and folding in the rock, while the variety of colours are a result of the introduction of impurities as they were formed or during metamorphism. Hematite provides the red, serpentine the green and yellow, graphite the black. White veining in these rocks is generally the mineral calcite.
Each carving was initially roughly shaped with a hammer and chisel, roughed out with a 7" grinder then a 5" grinder (with diamond then carborundum blades). Finer detail is accomplished using diamond impregnated rotary bits and files. From this point begins the second half of the process, bringing the form to a smooth and polished finish. This is done by hand with successively finer emery cloth and diamond sand paper. The smallest carvings take at least 5 hours to complete while the larger ones may take several days or more to finish.
Though they are meant for indoor display, they will hold up well outside but freezing temperatures could cause damage. Some of these works are fragile and could be easily damaged if dropped or bumped.
Over 600 million years in the making, and taken to its final shape by a Cape Bretoner, these carvings make an excellent souvenir of the Island or also serve well as retirement, wedding or going away gifts.
